VESDA is the world's most widely used high sensitivity aspirating type smoke detector.  It detects particles generated during the pre-combustion stage of a fire to allow the earliest intervention.  While highly sensitive, VESDA avoids nuisance alarms by using several techniques that conventional smoke detectors cannot.

VESDA's high quality aspirating smoke detectors work by continually drawing air into the pipe network by a high efficiency aspirator.  A sample of this air is then passed through a dual stage filter.  From the filter, the air sample is passed through to the calibrated detection chamber where it is exposed to a stable controlled laser light source.  When smoke is present, light is scattered within the detector chamber and is instantly identified by the highly sensitive receiver system.   The signal is then processed and presented via a bar graph display.  The VESDA detectors are then able to communicate this information to a fire alarm control panel, a software management system or a business management system via relays or a high level interface.

Badger Fire Protection, (formerly Figgie Fire Protection Systems) was formed in September, 1992 from the consolidation of ASCOA Fire Systems and Badger-Powhatan.

Badger-Powhatan traces its origins back to the last century. In 1832, the Powhatan Brass and Iron Works was established in Ranson, West Virginia. The name was taken from the great Chief Powhatan, supreme leader of the confederation of Algonquin tribes in the early 1600's.

Badger Fire Extinguisher Inc. also was formed before the turn of the century and was granted Underwriter Laboratories Listing No. 2 in hand-held fire extinguishers during the 1890's. Badger and Powhatan became part of Figgie International in 1965, and were joined into a single operating unit in 1968. The company was acquired by Williams Holdings in 1995.

Today Badger Fire Protection, Inc. markets and sells Badger industrial fire extinguishers and Range Guard commercial kitchen appliance fire suppression systems. The high-quality fire extinguishers are manufactured in Charlottesville, Virginia for nearly all applications as Badger features a variety of filling materials including dry chemicals, Carbon Dioxide, and water. Badger is one of the top manufacturers in the industrial fire extinguisher market.
